Frequently Asked Questions

What’s this all about?

This site is intended to be an unofficial relay and mirror for the most up-to-date information regarding Plastic’s return. Since Plastic went down, the primary source of official information has been Plastic Chat. We aim to compensate for the volatility of chat by both displaying the progress reports thus far and also proactively informing you of updates by e-mail (on request).

Aren’t there other sites doing this already? I read on a blog that Carl had shut down Plastic forever because he hates us and that he ran off to join the circus.

There has been an incredible amount of noise and disinformation generated in some forums. Someone who reads only bits and pieces of what’s out there might conclude that Plastic is dead and buried and that there has been no news.

Why are you taking those messages on Plastic Chat so seriously? Anyone could have written those, it must be a fake Carl!

The information posted by Carl on Plastic Chat isn’t digitally signed, yet several details - the fact that some update messages are coded into bob (Plastic Chat’s official bot) and the fact that he asked to test a URL, are things that would seem hard for anyone but Carl to engineer.

I have extra information you didn’t include about Plastic’s status!

If you have extra information you think relevant, send it to Plasticians@DontGiveUpOnPlastic.com. However, we will only include material that’s very credible and directly related to Plastic.com’s status

Who’s behind this site, anyway? Do you have an “in”?

This site was put up by two Plastic editors, Humberto and John. We don’t have any special information, but as volunteer editors for 5 years or so, we’ve seen Plastic revive after its share of downtimes of varying lengths.

I’ve read the updates, but I’m not convinced. Carl wrote “We’ll be back up,” but that’s pretty ambiguous. Plus, X days have passed since the date mentioned in the last message.

Our interpretation is that Plastic is being given a tech overhaul that has taken an unfortunately long time, but you are welcome to draw your own conclusions from the updates. One thing to remember, though, is that Carl mentioned he didn’t like giving out dates in the first place because he needed the leeway.

Ok, so let’s say I believe you. It’s been two months, and I have needs! Now I’m supposed to twiddle my thumbs?

Not all all…go out there and play the field. Check in now and then, or leave us your e-mail and we’ll let you know when your Plastic is ready.
